In the beginning when you were learning about his trade, what was most surprising to you?
When I first started in this trade, I was shocked by how much work and time went into making a plastic part. Before working in this trade, I would go to the store and pick up what I needed - and it never crossed my mind just how much time and effort was put into making the mold or plastic part. Another thing that I was surprised by was the cost of everything, from the raw steel that is needed , all the way up to the purchased components used to finish off the injection mold. Industrial Mold & Machine recently made a mold that had over 600 pieces, just to create a small part in a spray bottle. The cost to make that mold was astonishing to me. I recall wondering how all of that investment was simply for that small piece, and questioning the price required to manufacture the whole spray bottle. A final point that amazed me, was learning about how precise everything has to be measured, down to the less that one-thousandth of an inch, and knowing that if the measurement isn’t right, the cost to fix the mistake could add quite a bit of extra time and work into the mold. All in all, I feel like every day I get to learn a new skill, or just small facts about the mold making process, which all add up to having a better understanding of the work we do here at IMM.
